Dr Karen Bingham, Global Head of Operations

Karen is an experienced scientist with many years of commercial and GLP knowledge, having specialised in contract safety testing for the biopharmaceutical industry prior to joining Biopta to set up commercial operations in 2006.  Karen graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Molecular Biology and a PhD in Cell Engineering from the University of Glasgow.  As Global Head of Operations at Biopta, Karen leads a team of highly skilled scientists at Biopta’s UK (GLP-accredited) and US laboratories.

Lee Christie, Laboratory Manager

Lee graduated with a MSci in Pharmacology from the University of Glasgow in 2004. During her degree, Lee completed an Industrial Placement year in the Psychopharmacology department at Vernalis plc, Berkshire (2002 - 2003).  In her final year at University Lee completed a final project in myography working under the supervision of Craig Daly in the Cardiovascular Unit at the University of Glasgow (2003 - 2004).  This experience then led her to take up the position of Research Technologist at Biopta Ltd, joining the small team of Prof. Chris Hillier and Dr. David Bunton.  Lee has grown with the company and after working with the team to implement the GLP systems in 2006, received a promotion to the position of Study Director. After 6 years in this position, Lee is now taking up the role of Laboratory Manager and is responsible for the day to day planning and running of the laboratory.

Graeme Macluskie, R&D Manager

A specialist in in-vivo/in-vitro Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics, Graeme joined Biopta in 2011 and leads Biopta’s R&D programme.  Graeme holds a BSc Honours in Biochemistry and Pharmacology from the University of Strathclyde, from which he graduated in 2001. Prior to joining Biopta, Graeme held the position of Senior Supervisor within the DMPK group at a leading contract research organisation based in Scotland. An experienced scientist with several years’ experience in designing and delivering preclinical projects for Pharmaceutical and Biotech customers, Graeme uses this experience to deliver R&D projects which add to Biopta’s wide range of human tissue based models.

Dr Timothy Westfall, Director Business Development

With nearly 20 years of pharmaceutical industry experience in the preclinical and early clinical development of new medicines Timothy D. Westfall, PhD, leads business development activities at Biopta. Dr Westfall earned his PH.D. in pharmacology and physiology from the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow UK) where his research focused on autonomic neurotransmission and smooth muscle function. He previously worked at GlaxoSmithKline where he led multiple projects involving smooth muscle dysfunction and more recently has been working in contract research, specializing in the preclinical validation of potential medicines for the pharmaceutical industry. He has authored numerous scientific publications and is a member of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and the American Urological Association.
